vendor spotlight: tabletop

the next vendor spotlight is on something a little different - a welcome change from typical big box home goods retailers, tabletop dc is a delightful little shop nestled on the groundfloor of a converted dupont row-home.   this shop is my go-to spot for all types of gifts: bridal shower gifts, baby shower gifts, wedding gifts, children's birthday gifts, etc.  i love that it carries all sorts of unique and unusual items, and its beautifully curated space is always fun to browse!

daphne olive, one of tabletop's owners, was kind enough to answer some questions for me!

tell me a little about the history of the shop.

tabletop was not even a mere twinkle in the eyes and minds of three very accomplished individuals (actually, one individual and a husband/wife duo) in the autumn or winter of 2002 (it was a long time ago). we were in dupont circle, cold and probably hungry and in need of some fun shopping. and there was nothing. no retail oasis to quench our thirst for brightly colored, well designed and affordable home accessories slash gifts. so, we did what any resourceful and talented group of friends would do- we found the nearest bar and had some french onion soup.

this is what happened next...

after some time had passed...let's fast forward: business plan, found space, quit job (eek!), had some drinks, ate takeout, cried, worried, fought, ordered stuff, built store, painted store, opened boxes, drank some more...

tabletop opened the door (yes, just one) to it's first customers in may 2003. hoorah!

*some of this may be fictional but some parts are true; and all of it is based on real life, some of which is ours and some, not so much.

tabletop carries such fun and unique products.  what is your aesthetic and goal when searching for products for your shop?

First of all, thank you!

My partners and I have a shared vision of a happy modern environment that makes for a lovely place to live. The aesthetic of the store is the place where our personal tastes overlap. We simply buy things we like and would want to own ourselves and/or give as gifts to those we love. Our goal is to find products in our aesthetic that will be useful and fun in as many parts of life as possible. We are always looking for new products in categories we haven't yet covered.

does tabletop offer registry services?

We do offer registry services and put the registries online. This is the registry page of our website:
