San Francisco Maternity Session at Crissy Field & the Palace of Fine Arts | S & T

There is something especially beautiful about photographs made in the quiet anticipation before a baby arrives. You are still a family of two, but everything is already changing. A maternity session is a chance to slow down and remember this fleeting in-between season, before you know exactly who your little person will become.

For Sarah and T, that meant a relaxed maternity session in San Francisco, with two of the city's most beautiful settings as the backdrop: the windswept shoreline of Crissy Field and the architectural beauty of the Palace of Fine Arts.

The result is a collection of images that feels both distinctly San Francisco and deeply personal to them.

A San Francisco maternity session at Crissy Field

We began at the beach near Crissy Field, where the landscape gives maternity photographs an effortless, editorial quality. With views across the water toward the Golden Gate Bridge, open grasses, and plenty of room to wander, it is a wonderful setting for photographs that feel natural rather than overly posed.

The wind, the expansive landscape, and the changing light all became part of the story.

Rather than creating a series of identical poses, the session unfolded organically, with plenty of movement and moments for S and T to simply be together. Those in-between interactions are often some of my favorite photographs from a maternity session: the way you naturally reach for one another, a quiet laugh, or the anticipation of what is just around the corner.

The Palace of Fine Arts

From the openness of Crissy Field, we continued to the Palace of Fine Arts, one of San Francisco's most recognizable architectural landmarks.

The classical columns, reflecting lagoon, and surrounding greenery created a completely different feeling from the first half of the session. The architecture added a more refined, romantic quality while still allowing the photographs to feel personal and relaxed.

For a maternity session, choosing more than one setting can be especially meaningful. It allows the finished gallery to have a sense of variety without feeling disconnected, moving from expansive landscape photographs to quieter portraits and intimate moments between the two of you.

Waiting on baby

There is a particular kind of anticipation that comes with maternity photographs. You know that life is about to change, but you cannot quite imagine how much.

That is part of what makes this season worth documenting.

These photographs aren't only about pregnancy. They are about the relationship that exists before the baby arrives, the excitement of becoming parents, and the small moments of connection that can be easy to overlook in the middle of preparing for a completely new chapter.

Looking back, I hope these images bring S and T back to exactly how this season felt: the anticipation, the excitement, and the two of them waiting to meet the person who would change their lives.

Fine art maternity and family photography

Maternity photography is just one part of telling the larger story of a family. From pregnancy to newborn photographs and the everyday years that follow, I love documenting the connections that make each family unique.

My approach to family photography is relaxed and personal, with an artistic and editorial eye. Whether we photograph at home, outdoors, or somewhere meaningful to your family, the goal is to create images that feel like you rather than a collection of prescribed poses.

You can see more recent family work, including an intimate in-home family session in Washington, DC, on the Lissa Ryan Photography family blog, as well as this summer maternity session in Washington, DC.

S and T, thank you for allowing me to document this beautiful season of your lives. It was an honor to photograph you both as you waited to meet your baby.
