Sarah and Zach's November wedding brought together the elegant French-inspired architecture of Meridian House, an autumn garden filled with golden light, and a celebration that felt classic without being overly formal. From Sarah getting ready with her mother to portraits among the trees and an outdoor ceremony surrounded by fall foliage, the day offered so many opportunities to photograph both the beauty of the setting and the people at the heart of it.

For couples considering a Meridian House wedding in Washington, DC, this celebration is also a great example of how I approach photographing historic DC venues: using the architecture and gardens as part of the story while leaving plenty of room for genuine moments and connection.

Getting Ready at the Park Hyatt

Sarah's morning began with quiet, meaningful moments as she prepared for the ceremony. Her simple Sarah Seven gown, seasonal bouquet, and carefully chosen paper details created a beautiful visual foundation for the day.

I especially love photographing these quieter parts of a wedding day because they give the final gallery a sense of place and anticipation. Rather than photographing only the finished details, I look for the hands fastening a dress, a parent seeing the bride ready for the first time, and all of those small interactions that would otherwise be easy to overlook.

Sarah's mother helped her into her dress, creating one of those wonderfully unscripted moments that photographs beautifully without needing to be directed.

One of the things I love most about Meridian House wedding photography is the variety available without needing to travel between locations.

The historic mansion provides an elegant architectural backdrop for getting-ready photographs and details, while the gardens offer a completely different feeling for portraits and the ceremony. Before the ceremony, Sarah and Zach took a little time for portraits around the Meridian House grounds.

Their portraits are a good example of my approach to posing: there is direction, but not a constant stream of instructions. I want couples to have a beautiful starting point and then have enough space to interact naturally with one another.

Sarah's long veil became part of the landscape, stretching across the stone terrace and catching the light, while the surrounding gardens created a sense of intimacy despite being in the middle of Washington, DC.

I also love the way Zach's deep green suit works with the fall surroundings. The colors feel seasonal without looking overly coordinated, allowing the images to retain a timeless quality years after the wedding.

Fall in Washington, DC can be wonderfully unpredictable, but November can also offer some of the most beautiful light and foliage of the year. For couples planning a fall wedding at Meridian House, I always recommend building enough flexibility into the timeline to take advantage of the best light rather than treating portraits as something that simply needs to happen at a particular minute.

The setting also allows the photographs to feel connected to the season without relying on overtly autumnal decor. Here, the changing leaves and garden itself provided all the color and atmosphere needed.

Photographing the Details

Sarah and Zach chose elegant, understated details that complemented the historic setting. Their invitation suite incorporated soft neutrals, handwritten typography, botanical elements, and their initials, while the florals brought together creamy white blooms, blush and caramel roses, greenery, and deeper autumn tones.

For historic DC venues like Meridian House, I generally encourage couples to let the setting inform the details rather than trying to compete with it.

The goal isn't to make every photograph look like a styled editorial. Instead, I want the details to feel like your wedding, in this particular place and season.

That approach also gives me more visual variety throughout the gallery, from carefully composed detail photographs to the way those details appear naturally throughout the day.

A Meridian House Wedding With a Timeless Feel

Looking back at Sarah and Zach's wedding, what stands out most is how naturally all of the elements work together: the historic architecture, the gardens, the autumn light, the understated details, and most importantly, the relationships between the people there.

That is what I love about photographing weddings in Washington, DC. The city has no shortage of beautiful venues, but the most memorable photographs are rarely just about the venue. They're about what happened there.

Meridian House gives couples an especially beautiful canvas for that kind of wedding photography: elegant enough for formal portraits, intimate enough for genuine moments, and surrounded by gardens that change beautifully with the seasons.
