Summer Wedding at Meridian House in Washington DC | Sarah & Jay

There are few places in Washington, DC that feel quite as romantic as Meridian House. Tucked into a quiet residential neighborhood, this historic French-inspired mansion combines elegant architecture, intimate interiors, and lush gardens in a way that feels distinctly DC without feeling overly formal.

For couples drawn to a wedding that feels timeless, personal, and effortlessly elegant, Meridian House is one of my favorite Washington, DC wedding venues to photograph. The gardens create beautiful opportunities for portraits and outdoor celebrations, while the historic interiors provide an entirely different mood as the day unfolds.

Sarah and Jay's summer wedding was a beautiful example of what makes the venue so special. Their day moved from Georgetown to Meridian House, combining classic DC architecture, thoughtful details, lush summer florals, and plenty of space for the two of them to simply enjoy being married.

Sarah and Jay had recently celebrated their first anniversary when I found myself reminiscing about their beautiful wedding day.

We started the day at the Rosewood Hotel in Georgetown, where Sarah and her girls got ready. Her mother had collected a beautiful antique dish to hold Sarah's jewelry, and their elegant invitation suite set the tone for the classic, understated celebration to come.

From there, we headed to the Georgetown Canal for Sarah and Jay's first look before making our way to Christ Church Georgetown for their wedding ceremony.

After the ceremony, we headed to one of my favorite DC wedding venues: Meridian House.

Holly Chapple transformed the gardens and reception spaces with gorgeous neutral arrangements and place settings accented with olive branches. The result felt refined without being fussy, allowing the historic character of Meridian House to remain part of the story.

One of the things I love most about photographing weddings at Meridian House is the variety it gives you without requiring a lot of travel.

The architecture provides an elegant backdrop for portraits, while the gardens offer a softer, more organic setting. That combination allows a wedding gallery to feel visually varied while still maintaining a cohesive sense of place.

For couples planning a Meridian House wedding, I particularly love building portraits around the transition between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Rather than treating portraits as a separate production, I like to use the property as it naturally unfolds throughout the day: the architecture, gardens, changing light, and small pockets of quiet all become part of the visual story.

The linden grove is especially beautiful later in the day. It creates a more intimate, tucked-away feeling and is the perfect place to step away from the reception for a few minutes.

That's exactly what Sarah and Jay did.

My absolute favorite part of Sarah and Jay's wedding was something they intentionally planned just for themselves.

At the end of the evening, the two of them stepped away from their guests and shared a private dance in the linden grove to their favorite song.

After a wedding day filled with family, friends, traditions, photographs, and celebration, it gave them a quiet moment to simply be together.

I love when couples build moments like this into their wedding day. They don't have to be elaborate or highly choreographed. Sometimes the most meaningful photographs come from creating a little space to slow down and remember what the day is actually about.

For Sarah and Jay, that final dance felt like the perfect ending to a beautiful summer wedding in Washington, DC.

If you're considering Meridian House for your Washington, DC wedding, I recommend thinking about the property as more than simply the backdrop for your ceremony and reception.

The historic interiors, gardens, and linden grove each offer something different photographically, and a thoughtfully planned timeline can allow us to make the most of all three.

I also love the way Meridian House works for couples who want their wedding to feel elegant and distinctly Washington without sacrificing intimacy. It has the architecture and history you expect from a classic DC wedding venue, but the gardens give the day a relaxed, personal quality.
