Some engagement sessions feel especially meaningful because they mark the beginning of something new. Others feel meaningful because they have already been a long time coming.
For Natalia and Pablo, their Washington, DC engagement session was both.
After nearly two years of waiting, postponements, and uncertainty brought on by COVID, we finally got to meet in person for their spring engagement session. What had originally been planned much earlier became a beautiful evening exploring two very different sides of Washington, DC: the gardens and architecture surrounding the Smithsonian Castle and the grand, unmistakable backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial.
The result was exactly what I love about engagement photography in DC: photographs that feel romantic and timeless without losing the sense of place that makes the city special.
A Spring Engagement Session in Washington, DC
We began the evening near the Smithsonian Castle, where the warm spring light filtered through the trees and created a soft, luminous setting for portraits.
Natalia wore a beautiful pink lace dress that felt perfectly at home among the fresh greens of spring. Rather than keeping the session focused entirely on posed portraits, we spent time walking, talking, and letting the evening unfold naturally. Those in-between moments are often some of my favorites because they give a couple space to relax into the experience and simply enjoy being together.
For couples planning a Washington, DC engagement session, the National Mall offers an incredible variety of backdrops within a relatively small area. Historic architecture, gardens, tree-lined paths, wide open views, and the monuments themselves can all become part of the story.
That variety also makes it possible to create a gallery that feels visually layered rather than like a series of portraits taken in one location.
Photographing at the Lincoln Memorial
Later in the evening, we made our way toward the Lincoln Memorial to catch the last of the golden light over the Potomac.
The Lincoln Memorial is one of my favorite locations for engagement and portrait photography in Washington, DC, particularly around sunrise and sunset. The pale marble architecture reflects the changing light beautifully, creating an almost luminous quality in photographs.
It is also a wonderful example of why timing matters so much when photographing around the National Mall. The same location can feel completely different depending on the time of day. Early morning offers softer crowds and beautiful directional light, while evening gives you the possibility of golden light over the Potomac and a warmer, more romantic atmosphere.
For couples who want the iconic DC experience without having every photograph feel overly formal, I like to balance the grand architecture with quieter moments between the two of you. A hand held on the steps, a walk together, a laugh between portraits, or simply taking in the view can often say much more about a relationship than a perfectly posed image.

Why the National Mall Works So Well for Engagement Photos
One of the reasons I love photographing engagement sessions around the National Mall is the contrast between scale and intimacy.
You can create a dramatic portrait with the Lincoln Memorial or Washington Monument in the background, then turn a corner and make something quieter and more personal beneath the trees. That combination allows an engagement gallery to feel both unmistakably Washington, DC and genuinely personal to the couple.
I also approach these sessions with an eye toward movement and variety. My goal isn't to spend an hour telling you exactly how to stand. Instead, I'll guide you when direction is helpful, while leaving room for the natural interactions, expressions, and small moments that make the photographs feel like you.

And after such a long wait, Natalia and Pablo didn't have to wait much longer to celebrate.
Their wedding followed soon after at Washington National Cathedral and DAR, bringing their story full circle. The same couple who had finally gotten their long-awaited engagement photographs were now celebrating with the people they loved most in two of Washington's most beautiful historic spaces.
