Favorite DC Area Locations for Engagement Sessions

Choosing the right location for your engagement session is about so much more than a pretty backdrop. The best sessions are rooted in connection, trust, and space to be yourselves and places where you can move naturally, forget about the camera, and simply be together are the most conducive to achieving that. Whether you're envisioning elegant gardens, world-class museums, historic neighborhoods, or an intimate session at home, DC offers incredible engagement photo locations.

As a Washington, DC–based fine art wedding and portrait photographer, I help guide my couples toward locations that photograph beautifully and feel comfortable and unforced. Below are some of my favorite engagement session locations in the DMV, chosen for their light, texture, pacing, and ability to create timeless, emotionally honest images.

The National Portrait Gallery or the National Gallery of Art - Washington, DC

Why I love it: Both the National Portrait Gallery and the National Gallery of Art offer an elegant, editorial backdrop that feels distinctly Washington, DC without being overly literal. The architecture, symmetry, and quiet moments inside these spaces lend themselves to refined, art-forward imagery that feels timeless and deeply personal. The exterior of the buildings also offer beautiful architecture and hidden garden spaces that allow for great variety throughout the session.

Best time for photos: Late morning or early afternoon on weekdays tends to be quieter. We’ll always plan carefully around foot traffic and light.

Permit / fee: Photography policies vary by museum. Casual photography is often permitted, but professional sessions may require prior approval. I’ll help guide this process.

The REACH and The Kennedy Center - Washington, DC

Why I love it as a photographer: The REACH and the Kennedy Center are one of my favorite modern locations in Washington. The clean white architecture, sculptural lines, expansive terraces, and views of the Potomac create an editorial feel while still feeling warm and inviting. It offers a wonderful contrast to DC's historic architecture and is perfect for couples drawn to a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic.

Best time for photos: About an hour before sunset through blue hour. The soft evening light reflects beautifully off the white buildings, and if we stay a little later, the campus takes on an entirely different mood as the lights come on.

Permit / fee: Photography is generally permitted in the outdoor public spaces. If you’d like to use the upstairs terrace, it’s worth calling to confirm that it will be accessible and that there isn’t an event scheduled.

Tudor Place Historic House & Garden - Washington, DC*

Why I love it: Tudor Place is one of my favorite hidden gems in Georgetown. The formal gardens, brick pathways, and historic architecture of the sandy pink historic home feel refined and timeless - perfect for couples who love classic style and a more editorial look. Also, that rose garden in bloom is a fairyland of beauty!

Best time for photos: Late afternoon into early evening for soft light across the gardens.

Permit / fee: A contract and photography fee are required and must be arranged directly with Tudor Place.

*If Tudor Place is unavailable for your session, there are several other gorgeous historic homes in DC that are also favorite locations of mine, including Meridian House and Anderson House!

A Favorite Local Spot - Bar, Bookstore, or Café

Why I love it: Including a meaningful local spot, like a favorite bar, bookstore, or café, adds personality and authenticity to an engagement session. These images often feel the most natural and connected because they reflect how you actually spend time together and the favorite places that you frequent at this time in your life and are instrumental in your relationship.

Best time for photos: Off-peak hours, typically mid-morning or late afternoon on weekdays, to avoid crowds.

Permit / fee: Policies vary by business. Some allow photography with permission, while others require a fee or signed agreement.

At Home - A Couple’s Own Space

Why I love it: There’s nothing more personal than photographing you in a space that already holds meaning, and in which you feel the most comfortable - your home. Whether it’s making coffee in the kitchen, relaxing on the sofa, or stepping outside onto the front stoop, at-home engagement sessions feel intimate, honest, and completely unforced. These images often become some of my couples’ favorites because they reflect real life, not a backdrop.

Best time for photos: Mid-morning or late afternoon, depending on the natural light in your home. We’ll plan around window light and the mood you’re drawn to.

Permit / fee: No permit required.

Bishop’s Garden at the National Cathedral - Washington, DC

Why I love it: The Bishop’s Garden feels like a secret European courtyard tucked inside the city. With stone pathways, archways, lush greenery, and cathedral details, it’s incredibly romantic and photographs beautifully year-round. The gardens are impeccably manicured and there’s lots of beautiful niches to tuck away for some privacy for cuddles with your person.

Best time for photos: Early morning or late afternoon/evening, when the light is soft and directional through the garden spaces.

Permit / fee: A photography permit and fee is required and must be arranged in advance through the National Cathedral.

The best engagement session isn't about finding the "perfect" location. It's about choosing a place that feels like you.

Whether that's wandering through a historic garden, exploring one of DC's incredible museums, strolling the streets of Old Town Alexandria, or simply making coffee together at home, the most meaningful photographs come from genuine connection. When you feel comfortable and present, your images naturally reflect who you are.
