There are weddings that feel beautifully designed, and then there are weddings that feel completely, unmistakably personal. Daniel and Christopher’s fall wedding at Barndiva in Healdsburg, California was both.
Set in Sonoma County wine country, their celebration brought together everything I love about photographing weddings: thoughtful details, an incredible sense of place, genuine emotion, and plenty of room for the people themselves to take center stage.
The day began quietly at Hotel Healdsburg, continued with an emotional ceremony at Barndiva officiated by the fabulous Latrice Royale, and ended with an intimate dinner surrounded by family and friends. There was beautiful fall florals, custom suits, candlelight, sunset, laughter, happy tears, and one spectacular surprise that no one in the room was going to forget.
It was an absolute joy to photograph.
Getting Ready at Hotel Healdsburg
Some of my favorite photographs from a wedding day happen before the ceremony, when everything is still unfolding.
Daniel and Christopher got ready together at the gorgeous Hotel Healdsburg, and I loved the relaxed energy of those early hours. Rather than separating the two of them into traditional getting-ready spaces, they shared the anticipation of the day together.
At one point, I caught Daniel finishing writing his vows in the hallway. It was a quiet, fleeting moment, but it said so much about what was about to happen.
Those are the moments I look for throughout a wedding day: the things that aren't necessarily scheduled or posed, but that become part of the story when you give them room to happen.
This wedding day had so many special moments, but some of my favorites were during the early part of the day, when the grooms got ready for their ceremony together and I snuck this photo of Daniel finishing writing his vows in the hallway of the gorgeous Hotel Healdsburg.
The wedding ceremony alternately had everyone laughing and crying tears of happiness - the grooms’ vows were so touching and sweet, and they were framed in that perfect sunset glow while pledging forever.
A Fall Wedding at Barndiva
Barndiva was a beautiful setting for this celebration, particularly in the soft light of a Northern California fall afternoon.
The venue has a wonderfully relaxed Sonoma character, which makes it especially well suited to couples who want their wedding to feel elevated without feeling overly formal. Rather than competing with the setting, the design for Daniel and Christopher's wedding worked with it: seasonal florals, warm autumn color, natural textures, and an intimate dinner atmosphere created a celebration that felt both sophisticated and completely at home in wine country.
From a photography perspective, venues like Barndiva offer something I value enormously: variety without requiring the day to feel overly staged.
The architecture and gardens provide a sense of place for wide environmental photographs, while smaller corners and pockets of beautiful light allow for quieter portraits and candid moments. As the afternoon moves toward sunset, the quality of the light changes dramatically, giving the photographs a natural progression from bright and airy to warm, intimate, and atmospheric.
For couples considering an outdoor or garden wedding, I always recommend thinking about the way the light moves through the venue rather than simply choosing a location because it looks beautiful in a photograph. The best portrait locations are often the ones that give us beautiful light and allow you to remain connected to the people and experience around you.
Vows at Sunset
The ceremony was one of those moments when everything seemed to come together at exactly the right time.
Daniel and Christopher exchanged vows in front of their family and friends, with Latrice Royale officiating. There was plenty of laughter throughout the ceremony, but their vows also brought tears to the eyes of the people who loved them most.
And then there was the light.
As they promised forever, the late afternoon sun wrapped the ceremony in that beautiful golden glow that photographers spend an entire wedding day hoping to find.
But beautiful light only matters when there is something meaningful happening inside it. Here, there was. The emotion between the two of them, the reactions from their guests, and the energy of the ceremony made those photographs about much more than the setting.
An Intimate Fall Dinner
After the ceremony, guests gathered for an intimate dinner reception at Barndiva.
Dragonfly Floral and Barndiva worked together to create a setting that felt perfectly suited to the season. The floral design brought in rich autumn texture and color while keeping the overall feeling warm and natural.
I love intimate receptions like this because they give the photography room to breathe. Instead of spending the entire evening moving from one formal photograph to another, there is time to photograph the things that happen naturally: a friend leaning across the table to tell a story, a parent laughing with a glass of wine in hand, a couple taking in the room they've just created for the people they love.
Those photographs often become some of the most meaningful images in a wedding gallery.v
And Then Latrice Royale Took the Stage
The evening had one spectacular surprise still to come.
Latrice Royale, who had officiated the ceremony earlier in the day, returned to the reception in a slinky, sparkly gown and performed two numbers for the crowd.
The room absolutely erupted.
It was the perfect ending to a wedding that never took itself too seriously while still feeling incredibly intentional. There was elegance, certainly, but there was also personality, humor, surprise, and a whole lot of joy.
And that's exactly what I hope wedding photographs preserve.
Not just what the room looked like.
Not just what everyone wore.
But what it felt like to be there.
