On a Sunday morning, C's family had pancakes to make, a little boy eager to help, and a new baby on the way. Rather than creating a traditional maternity session, C wanted photographs that captured this particular chapter of their family's life exactly as it felt: relaxed, connected, and wonderfully ordinary.

So we spent the morning at home.

C, a talented stylist herself, knew she wanted something personal rather than overly posed. Their weekend pancake tradition gave us the perfect setting to document the three of them together before their family grew.

At the time, they were a family of three. Their son was still little enough to be part of the breakfast preparations, and the familiar rhythm of their Sunday morning gave us plenty of opportunities for photographs that felt natural rather than staged.

That is one of my favorite things about an in-home family session. We don't have to manufacture meaningful moments when they are already happening around us.

The photographs become a record not only of what your family looked like, but of how this season of your life actually felt.

And knowing that I would eventually photograph this family again, after they had grown from three to five, made these photographs feel even more special.

Why I love in-home family photography

Your home doesn't have to look like a magazine for it to be the perfect setting for your family photographs.

In fact, some of my favorite family sessions happen at home precisely because children already know the space, parents aren't trying to entertain them for the camera, and everyone can settle into the rhythm of a normal morning.

For this session, breakfast gave us a natural starting point. Rather than asking everyone to smile at the camera, I could photograph the interactions happening organically: helping in the kitchen, making pancakes, sharing a quiet moment, and simply being together.

That approach is at the heart of my family photography. I want your photographs to feel beautiful and intentional, but never disconnected from who you are.

Photographing a family before a new baby arrives

Maternity photographs don't always need to center on a bump, a dramatic dress, or a perfectly styled portrait.

Sometimes the most meaningful maternity photographs are the ones that document who you were before your family changed.

For C and her family, this morning captured their life as a family of three just before welcoming their daughter. Their son was still the center of their weekend pancake tradition, and the photographs preserve that particular version of their family that would soon become part of their history.

There is something incredibly special about being able to look back and remember not only what your family looked like, but what an ordinary Sunday morning felt like.

Letting the story unfold

One of the benefits of an in-home session is that we don't have to manufacture moments.

I can photograph the way your child naturally moves through the house, the expressions that happen between posed photographs, and the small interactions that might otherwise disappear from memory. I pay attention to the light in your home, the composition of each room, and the relationships unfolding within it, while giving your family plenty of space to simply be together.

For families with young children, this can also make the experience much more relaxed. There is no need to keep everyone perfectly still or perfectly behaved. We can follow their energy and let the photographs develop from there.

The result is a gallery that combines beautifully composed portraits with the candid, fleeting moments that make your family yours.

A Sunday morning at home

For this family, it was pancakes.

A familiar kitchen. A favorite weekend tradition. A little boy excited to help. And parents preparing to welcome another child into their lives.

Those details may seem ordinary in the moment, but they are exactly the kinds of memories that become precious with time.

And perhaps my favorite part of this session is knowing that this wasn't the end of their story. When I photographed them again, they were no longer a family of three. They were a family of five.

That is one of the greatest gifts of family photography: getting to document the changes, seasons, and relationships that make up a life together.

What does an in-home family photography session look like?

An in-home family photography session is designed around the way your family naturally spends time together. Instead of moving through a series of formal poses, we use familiar spaces, routines, and activities to create photographs that feel authentic to your family.

For one family, that might mean making pancakes together on a Sunday morning. For another, it could be reading books in a child's bedroom, making breakfast, playing in the backyard, getting ready for a new baby, or simply spending time together on the couch.

The goal isn't to make your home look perfect or your children behave perfectly. I look for beautiful light, genuine interaction, thoughtful composition, and the small moments that tell the story of your family.

If your home doesn't have abundant natural light, that's okay, too. We can work with the rooms that photograph best and use the available light to create images that feel warm, intimate, and intentional.

And yes, children can be energetic, distracted, silly, or completely uninterested in having their photograph taken. That's part of real family life. Rather than asking them to perform for the camera, I give them room to be themselves and photograph the connection that naturally follows.

Planning an in-home family session in Washington, DC

If you're considering an in-home family or maternity session, you don't need to recreate this exact morning. Choose something that already belongs to your family.

Maybe it's Saturday pancakes, reading books in your child's room, making dinner together, playing in the backyard, or simply spending a slow morning at home.

The more familiar the activity, the more naturally your family's personality tends to come through.

In-Home Family & Maternity Photography FAQs

What should we do during an in-home family photography session?

You don't need to plan elaborate activities. Choose a few things your family genuinely enjoys doing together, such as making breakfast, reading, playing, baking, or spending time outside. Familiar activities tend to create the most natural interactions.

What if my home isn't photo-ready?

Your home does not need to be spotless or styled for a magazine. We will focus on the rooms and areas with the best light and composition, while incorporating the details that make your home feel like yours.

Can an in-home maternity session include older children?

Absolutely. An in-home maternity session can be a beautiful way to document the entire family before a new baby arrives. Including siblings also allows the photographs to capture their relationship with the baby-to-be and the family as it exists before the transition to a new chapter.

Do we have to pose during an in-home family session?

Not at all. I will guide you when helpful, particularly for portraits and family groupings, but much of the session is built around natural interaction. The result is a combination of thoughtfully composed portraits and candid photographs that reflect your family's personality.

Where do you photograph families?

I photograph families and maternity sessions throughout Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, including in clients' homes and meaningful outdoor locations. Sessions can be tailored to your family's personality, routines, and the season you are documenting.
