Fall Engagement Session in New York City | Jojo & Geoff
Autumn in New York City offers a captivating backdrop for engagement sessions, with its vibrant foliage and crisp air creating a romantic atmosphere. The city’s architecture, movement, layers of history, and constant change give a session an energy that feels unmistakably personal to the couple and unmistakably New York at the same time.
For Jojo and Geoff, their fall engagement session took us to the High Line, where the city became part of the story without ever overwhelming it. Photographing couples in a place that already holds meaning for them is one of my favorite ways to approach engagement sessions. Rather than creating a series of overly posed portraits, I want the photographs to feel like a memory of the two of you actually being together.
And for this session, the combination of autumn foliage, architectural lines, soft light, and the city surrounding us made the High Line an especially beautiful setting.
A Fall Engagement Session on the High Line
The High Line is one of my favorite places to photograph in New York because it offers so much visual variety within a relatively small area. Its elevated perspective gives you glimpses of the surrounding architecture and skyline, while the gardens and winding paths create quieter, more intimate moments.
For engagement photography, that variety is particularly useful. We can move naturally through the space rather than spending an entire session in one spot, allowing the photographs to change with the environment.
Jojo and Geoff's session balanced those elements beautifully. Some photographs feel distinctly urban, with the architecture and cityscape framing them, while others are quieter and more romantic, surrounded by the textures of the fall landscape.
The result is a gallery that feels both editorial and genuine, with photographs that document not only what they looked like during this season of their lives, but what it felt like to experience New York together.
Why the High Line Works So Well for Engagement Photography
If you're considering a New York City engagement session, the High Line offers an especially strong combination of scenery and atmosphere.
The architecture creates natural editorial frames. The lines of the buildings, bridges, and elevated walkway add structure to portraits without requiring complicated posing.
The gardens soften the city. The planting throughout the High Line provides an organic counterpoint to the surrounding architecture, particularly in spring and fall.
There is room for movement. Instead of standing in one location and looking at the camera, couples can walk, talk, pause, and interact naturally. Those in-between moments often become some of my favorite photographs.
The city remains part of the story. For couples who love New York, I don't want to hide the city behind a generic portrait backdrop. The buildings, streets, and energy of Manhattan are part of what makes the photographs meaningful.
For a fall session like Jojo and Geoff's, I especially love the way the changing foliage adds warmth and texture to the photographs while the surrounding architecture keeps the images feeling sophisticated and distinctly New York.
Photographing the Place, Not Just the Couple
One of the things I love most about engagement sessions is that they can be more than a collection of beautiful portraits. They can document a place and a particular chapter of your life together.
That might mean photographing the neighborhood where you live, returning to a favorite restaurant, walking through a park where you spend weekends, or building a session around a city that has become part of your story.
I approach these sessions with an artistic and editorial eye, but the goal is never to make you feel like you're performing for the camera. I'll guide you when direction is helpful, but I'll also leave room for the spontaneous moments: the laugh between photographs, the way you naturally reach for each other, or the quiet pause when you forget I'm there.
Those are the photographs that tend to become the ones you return to years later.
From Engagement Session to Wedding Day
Jojo and Geoff's New York City engagement session was part of a larger story that eventually brought us back together for their winter wedding at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, DC.
Their wedding was a beautiful reminder of why I love photographing couples across different chapters of their relationship. An engagement session gives us the opportunity to create photographs that feel relaxed and personal, while also allowing us to get comfortable working together before the wedding day.

Along the Hudson River Waterfront
We also took the engagement session down to the Hudson River waterfront, adding a completely different perspective to the photographs. The open views, water, and changing light create a beautiful contrast to the architectural density of Manhattan. Waterfront locations are especially lovely for couples who want a few photographs that feel more expansive and serene, while still keeping New York unmistakably present in the background. I love using these quieter stretches of the city to slow the pace of a session down, giving couples space to walk together, take in the view, and simply enjoy being together while I document the moments naturally.
Throughout the session, the crisp fall air added a refreshing energy, and the soft morning hues enhanced the romantic ambiance. Capturing Jojo and Geoff’s love story in such a quintessential New York setting was an absolute joy.
