There is something special about an engagement session that feels less like a photo shoot and more like an evening spent together. For Hilary and Colin, that meant wandering through Georgetown on a warm summer evening, getting comfortable in front of the camera, and simply enjoying this season of life together before their wedding day.

We met just a few months before their wedding for a mini engagement session designed in part to help them feel more at ease being photographed. By the end of the evening, they were completely themselves in front of the camera, and I’d say they absolutely nailed it.

As a Washington, DC wedding and engagement photographer, I love sessions like this because they leave room for both beautiful portraits and the quieter, in-between moments that make photographs feel personal. Georgetown gives us plenty of both.

A Summer Engagement Session in Georgetown

Georgetown is one of my favorite places in Washington, DC for an engagement session because the neighborhood offers so much visual variety within a relatively small area. Historic brick sidewalks, rowhouses, leafy streets, architectural details, and the waterfront all give a session a sense of place without making the location feel like the main subject.

For Hilary and Colin, we kept things relaxed and allowed the session to unfold naturally as we moved through the neighborhood. Rather than spending the entire time directing them into traditional poses, I encouraged them to walk, talk, laugh, and interact with each other. Those small movements create the kind of photographs that feel like them rather than simply photographs of a couple standing together.

Why Georgetown Works So Well for Engagement Photography

One of the things I consider when choosing a location for an engagement session is how many different environments we can create without making the experience feel rushed.

Georgetown is particularly beautiful because we can begin with the classic architecture and residential streets, then move toward greener spaces and the waterfront. The neighborhood's historic character gives photographs an editorial quality, while the changing scenery keeps the gallery from feeling repetitive.

The architecture is also especially flattering for film photography. Brick, stone, painted doors, iron details, and soft greenery create layers and texture without requiring elaborate styling. On a summer evening, the trees and buildings can also help create pockets of open shade, which gives us softer, more flattering light during the earlier part of the session.

And as the sun gets lower, we can take advantage of the warmer light and finish with more atmospheric images.

For couples who want their engagement photographs to feel distinctly Washington, DC without relying entirely on monuments, Georgetown is a wonderful option.

Making Your Engagement Session Feel Like You

The best engagement photographs rarely come from trying to perform for the camera.

Instead, I want couples to have room to move, interact, and forget about the fact that they're being photographed. We'll still create intentional portraits, but I'll guide you through them rather than expecting you to know what to do.

That is one reason I love incorporating an engagement session into the wedding experience. By the time your wedding day arrives, you've already had the chance to work together, learn how I photograph, and discover that you don't have to be naturally comfortable in front of a camera to have photographs that feel effortless.

Hilary and Colin's session was a perfect example. What started as a chance to get comfortable before their wedding quickly became an evening filled with genuine smiles, movement, and connection.

Planning a Georgetown Engagement Session

If you're considering Georgetown for your own engagement photographs, I recommend thinking about the experience as much as the final images.

A weekday evening is often ideal for this type of session, particularly when we can work around the strongest light and avoid some of the neighborhood's busiest periods. I also like to build in enough flexibility to move between locations rather than committing to a rigid shot list.

Your outfits can also help shape the feel of the photographs. A polished, editorial look works beautifully against Georgetown's historic architecture, while softer or more relaxed clothing can make the session feel more casual and intimate. The goal isn't to dress like someone else's engagement session. It's to choose clothing that feels elevated while still feeling like you.

Most importantly, give yourself permission to enjoy it. Your engagement session isn't a test run that you can fail. It's an opportunity to document this particular chapter of your relationship before everything changes again.
